Delivering Independence:
how we make a difference

When discussing independence, we often think about doing things on our own, making our own decisions, and living life on our own terms. But for people with disabilities, independence can mean something even deeper. It’s not about doing everything by yourself; it’s about having control, making choices, and participating fully in life. True independent living is about empowerment—essential for improving quality of life.

At the core of independence is the ability to make choices. Whether deciding what to wear, when to go out, or how to spend your time, having the power to make decisions brings dignity and self-worth. However, to make choices, a person requires certain tools: a means of communication, the ability to control their environment, and the freedom to move from one place to another. Without these, choice becomes limited, and so does independence. Ensuring that independence is a reality often depends on the availability of assistive technologies such as HomeBrace. HomeBrace has based the design and development of its products on specifically addressing the needs of the most excluded. Delivering independence through technology requires constant innovation and a focus on future opportunities and emerging technologies.

Communication: Finding Your Voice

For many people with disabilities, communication is the first and most crucial step toward independence. Expressing needs, thoughts, and feelings gives people agency in their lives. HomeBrace offers innovative solutions that give a voice to those struggling with traditional communication.

Take, for example, HomeBrace’s eye-tracking communication systems. These devices allow individuals with limited mobility or speech impairments to communicate using just their eyes. Whether ordering a meal, asking for assistance, or simply having a conversation, these tools break down barriers. The ability to express oneself in any situation can be life-changing, transforming isolation into connection and giving people the freedom to make everyday choices.

Recognising this, we offer innovative communication aids with various operating options, such as touch and eye control, to meet the needs of individuals. The MyBrace Display combines communication software with an eye control system. This enables symbol and text-based communication via the eyes and control of the environment. Our users find the systems easy to operate and welcome how easy it is to customise a personal system. This experience builds confidence in the system, motivating each person to communicate. Environmental Control: Shaping Your Space

The second element of independence is having control over the world around you. For most of us, turning on a light or adjusting the thermostat is second nature. But for someone with limited physical mobility, these everyday tasks can be impossible without the right support.

HomeBrace’s environmental control systems enable users to operate household appliances, open doors, and manage lighting and heating—often with simple voice commands or customised switches tailored to individual needs. Imagine opening a window on a warm day or adjusting your TV without asking for help. These small actions empower people to take charge of their surroundings, offering a sense of ownership and confidence.

To deliver this, we developed the MyEnvi environment control module, an assistive device with unique user options. For instance, if your mobility is impaired due to conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), you can use the MyEnvi environment control unit to adjust your bed to your preferences, use an alert button, control lights, and operate many other devices, such as your phone, radio, or TV.

Many of our users are delighted to discover that they can use familiar controls such as the joystick of their powered chair or an additional switch combined with our scanning module. MyEnvi is fully functional with voice control alone or by using eye gaze. Like the communication system, MyEnvi is easy to personalise by adding devices, assigning names, or creating images to highlight buttons. You can even mount this on your wheelchair using MyEnvi Mobile. Much more information is available at https://homebrace.com/en/myenvi.php.

Mobility: The Freedom to Explore

Last but not least, moving from place to place is essential for maintaining independence. Without mobility, choices are limited to the immediate environment, and opportunities for social interaction, employment, and recreation can be out of reach.

HomeBrace’s advanced and innovative mobility support enables users to navigate safely and comfortably. Whether visiting a friend, going to work, or enjoying a trip to the park, these tools open up a world of possibilities. Independence isn’t just about staying home and managing alone; it’s about engaging with your community and experiencing life fully.

The HomeBrace Eyegaze system helps you to control your power wheelchair independently. The MyEcc app converts eye movements from Eyegaze communication devices into mouse movements and enables people with conditions such as cerebral palsy to drive their wheelchair safely in all directions and adjust their sitting position. Thanks to the intelligent software, the controls adapt individually to the user and make operation more intuitive and comfortable. HomeBrace has taken into account the need for multiple access options and offers the user two control systems with proportional control and intuitive operation.

HomeBrace recognized the need to develop beyond this. So the MyEcc system was designed so that you can integrate the front camera of a communication device and add a rear-facing camera that gives the user the full surrounding field of vision, looking forward when moving forward and providing a rear view when moving backwards, providing additional safety for the user and their surroundings! Consistency is enhanced by MyArm, a dynamic mechanical arm that ensures the distance between the eyes and the controls remains constant, maximizing ease of use and quality.

A further step in this direction is the implementation of proportional eye control in the app, which ensures smooth and even more precise and comfortable control.

The MyEcc Pupil Prop is a special control - specially developed and designed for people who can only move their eyes independently. The field of vision remains unrestricted when using these glasses and no permanently installed display is required.

The core element is the glasses, which detect eye movement via a sensor and control the wheelchair in the respective direction of vision using the connected software.

The special feature of the MyEcc Pupil Prop is that it is the only eye control system for power wheelchairs that works reliably even in sunlight and outdoors thanks to its special photochromic lenses, which prevent reflections on the display.

More information about the system can be found online, covering both the MyEcc Prop and the MyEcc Pupil Prop. The former is a specialised control unit that, in conjunction with an eye-controlled communication aid, enables the independent operation of a power wheelchair (https://homebrace.com/en/myecc.php.
